What is Cervical Spondyloarthrosis?

Cervical spondyloarthrosis is an age-related change of the bones (vertebrae) and discs in the spine, which is often also referred to as cervical spondylosis or neck osteoarthritis.

This chronic degenerative joint disease causes permanent neck pain and stiffness in the neck, with middle-aged people and those over 60 years of age being the most affected.

Causes of Cervical Spondyloarthrosis

Cervical spondyloarthrosis is a condition that is directly related to the degenerative changes derived from age, which generate the deterioration of the vertebrae and discs of the spine.

Other factors that could contribute to its development include: traumatic injuries, wear and tear on the neck from maintaining poor posture, having jobs that require repetitive motions, or being in an awkward position for long periods of time.

Symptoms of Cervical Spondyloarthrosis

The main symptoms of cervical spondyloarthrosis are pain and stiffness in the neck, which worsen when the same position is held for a long time and improve with movement.

Although there are often no symptoms, numbness or abnormal sensations in the shoulders or arms, headaches, dizziness, or weakness in the hands may occasionally occur.

Diagnostic process - What to do in the event of a symptom?

In the presence of a symptom, it is important to avoid self-diagnosis and seek specialized medical attention immediately. The diagnostic process will include medical tests to diagnose cervical spondyloarthrosis, including: X-rays, MRIs, and a physical evaluation by a medical specialist.

The results of these tests will help to obtain a definitive diagnosis and determine the extent of the damage, in order to find the most appropriate treatment.

Treatment for Cervical Spondyloarthrosis

There is no known cure for cervical spondyloarthrosis, so the main goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms and prevent worsening of the condition. In this sense, there are various treatments that can help improve the symptoms of cervical spondyloarthrosis and the patient’s quality of life.

Conservative treatment

It includes non-invasive measures, such as: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, postural exercises, analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications, as well as the use of cervical collars, among others.

Surgical treatment

In severe and persistent cases, surgeries such as discectomy, cervical foraminotomy, cervical laminectomy or cervical arthroplasty may be used, depending on the characteristics of the patient.

Measures to prevent cervical spondyloarthrosis

Preventive measures that can be taken to prevent the development of cervical spondyloarthrosis include:

  • Maintain proper posture.
  • Perform regular physical exercises to strengthen the neck muscles.
  • Avoid neck injuries.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Avoid smoking.

Good postural hygiene is also recommended in the workplace and at home.

If you suspect that you suffer from cervical spondyloarthrosis, do not wait any longer to receive the appropriate treatment.
