SCHEDULE APPOINTMENT

What is a dropped shoulder and what does it look like?

Dropped shoulder, also known as shoulder ptosis, refers to a condition in which the shoulder appears to be lower or offset compared to the other shoulder. This can give an uneven appearance and can affect shoulder mobility and function.

Why does shoulder drop occur?

The causes of shoulder drop can vary; However, one of the most common is weakness or injury to the trapezius muscle, which is responsible for keeping the shoulder in the proper position. Other possible causes include: damage to the nerves that control the shoulder muscles, spinal cord injuries, or neuromuscular diseases.

What to do if I have a dropped shoulder?

If you suspect that you have a dropped shoulder, it is important to seek medical attention to get a proper diagnosis. Shoulder drop is a condition that cannot be corrected on its own, so it requires specialized care and treatment to address the underlying cause and improve shoulder function.

Diagnosing Shoulder Drop

The diagnosis of shoulder drop is usually made through the following steps:

  • Medical history: The doctor conducts an interview to learn about symptoms, when they began, or if the patient has experienced any injuries or trauma to the shoulder.
  • Physical exam: Next, the specialist will evaluate the posture, mobility, and strength of the shoulder; he or she will also palpate the area for tenderness or painful spots.
  • Imaging tests: In some cases, the doctor may order imaging tests (X-rays, MRIs, or ultrasounds) to get a clearer view of the shoulder structure, being able to identify possible injuries or abnormalities in the muscles, bones, or soft tissues.
  • Neurological tests: If a dropped shoulder is suspected to be caused by a problem with the nerves that control the shoulder muscles, the doctor may perform neurological tests to evaluate nerve function and determine if there are any disturbances in nerve conduction.

Treatments for Shoulder Drop

Treatments for dropped shoulder can vary depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Some possible treatments include:

Physiotherapy

Physical exercises and therapy can help strengthen the shoulder muscles and improve stability.

Botox Injections

In some cases, Botox injections may be given to help relax tight muscles and improve shoulder position.

Surgery

In severe cases or when other treatments have not been effective, surgery to correct the dropped shoulder may be considered. Surgery may involve repairing weakened or damaged muscles or transferring muscles to improve shoulder function.

Effects of Shoulder Drop on the Body

Shoulder sag can have several effects on the body. In addition to uneven physical appearance, there may be restrictions in the mobility and strength of the affected shoulder. This can make it difficult to do daily activities such as lifting heavy objects, reaching for objects on high shelves, or performing overhead movements. In addition, the dropped shoulder can cause discomfort and pain in the affected area.
